UN Warns of Worsening Humanitarian Crisis in Sudan After Fresh Wave of Violence

Khartoum, January 12, 2026 — The United Nations has issued a stark warning over a rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Sudan following a fresh surge of violence that has forced tens of thousands of civilians to flee their homes in recent days.

Clashes between rival armed groups have intensified across several regions, including parts of Darfur and Khartoum state, triggering new waves of displacement and overwhelming already fragile aid systems. UN officials say millions of people are now facing severe shortages of food, clean water, and medical care, with the crisis reaching what they describe as a “dangerous tipping point.”

According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, renewed fighting has disrupted key supply routes and forced several aid agencies to suspend operations in high-risk areas. Hospitals are struggling to treat the wounded, while disease outbreaks linked to overcrowded shelters and poor sanitation are becoming an increasing concern.

“The scale of suffering is growing by the day,” a senior UN humanitarian coordinator said in a briefing on Monday. “Without immediate access for aid workers and stronger international support, countless lives remain at risk.”

The latest violence comes as Sudan’s conflict enters another uncertain phase, with diplomatic efforts to revive peace talks making little progress. Civilians continue to bear the brunt of the fighting, with families fleeing to neighboring countries or seeking refuge in makeshift camps that lack basic services.

International relief organizations warn that funding gaps are compounding the crisis. Despite repeated appeals, humanitarian agencies say they have received only a fraction of the resources needed to provide food assistance, shelter, and emergency healthcare to the growing displaced population.

Global reaction has been swift, with several governments urging an immediate ceasefire and calling on all parties to protect civilians and allow unhindered humanitarian access. The African Union and regional partners have also renewed calls for dialogue, stressing that a political solution remains the only path to lasting stability.

As violence continues and aid access remains limited, the UN’s message is clear: Sudan’s humanitarian emergency is deepening, and without urgent global action, the consequences for millions of vulnerable people could become even more severe in the weeks ahead.
