Trump urges China’s Xi to free jailed Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai

Former US President Donald Trump has called on Chinese President Xi Jinping to release imprisoned Hong Kong media tycoon and pro-democracy figure Jimmy Lai, reigniting international attention on press freedom and political dissent in the Chinese-controlled city.

Speaking during a public appearance on Monday, Trump said he had urged Xi to intervene personally in Lai’s case, describing the veteran publisher as a “brave man” who is being punished for standing up for democratic values. The remarks come as Lai remains behind bars in Hong Kong, facing multiple charges under the controversial national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020.

Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was arrested following a sweeping crackdown on dissent that has reshaped Hong Kong’s political and media landscape. Human rights groups and Western governments have repeatedly condemned his detention, arguing that the charges against him are politically motivated and represent a broader assault on free expression.

Trump’s comments add to mounting international pressure on China, particularly as relations between Washington and Beijing remain strained over issues ranging from trade and technology to human rights. While Trump did not specify whether the appeal was made directly to Xi or through diplomatic channels, he suggested that the Chinese leader has the authority to secure Lai’s release if he chooses to do so.

China’s government has consistently defended the national security law, insisting it is necessary to restore stability after the 2019 pro-democracy protests. Beijing maintains that Jimmy Lai’s prosecution is a legal matter and has rejected foreign criticism as interference in its internal affairs.

Hong Kong authorities have echoed that position, stating that the rule of law applies equally to all residents. However, critics argue that the city’s once-independent judicial system has been severely undermined, with journalists, activists, and opposition figures increasingly targeted.

As Jimmy Lai’s trial continues, Trump’s intervention is likely to amplify global debate over Hong Kong’s future and the erosion of civil liberties under Beijing’s tightening grip.
