Russia-Ukraine War: Massive Russian Drone and Missile Attack Kills Civilians, Triggers Power Cuts

A large-scale Russian drone and missile assault struck multiple Ukrainian cities overnight, killing civilians, damaging critical infrastructure, and triggering widespread power outages, Ukrainian officials said on Tuesday. The attack marks one of the most intense aerial offensives in recent weeks, as the nearly three-year-old war shows no signs of slowing.

Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched dozens of drones and missiles in coordinated waves, targeting energy facilities, residential areas, and transport hubs. While Ukrainian air defences intercepted many of the incoming threats, several projectiles breached defenses, destroying eastern and central regions.

Local authorities confirmed civilian casualties, including injuries and fatalities, though the full toll is still being assessed. Emergency crews were deployed to damaged neighborhoods, where fires broke out, and apartment buildings suffered structural damage. In some areas, electricity and heating services were cut as temperatures remain low, raising humanitarian concerns.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the strikes, calling them “terror attacks” aimed at exhausting Ukraine’s civilian population during the winter season. He urged Western allies to accelerate deliveries of air defence systems, warning that Russia continues to exploit gaps in Ukraine’s protection against aerial assaults.

Russia has not immediately commented on the latest strikes. Moscow has repeatedly said its attacks target military and energy infrastructure, though Ukraine and international observers accuse Russian forces of deliberately striking civilian areas.

The latest escalation comes as diplomatic efforts remain stalled. Western officials say there is little indication that Moscow is willing to engage in meaningful peace talks, while Kyiv insists that any negotiations must respect Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Energy officials warned that repeated attacks on power infrastructure could worsen conditions for millions of Ukrainians in the coming weeks. Temporary blackouts were reported in several regions, with repair teams racing to restore services.

As the conflict continues, analysts say Russia’s reliance on drones and long-range missiles reflects a strategy focused on sustained pressure rather than rapid battlefield gains. For civilians, however, the cost remains devastating, with daily life repeatedly disrupted by air raid sirens and strikes.
