Iran and US Reaffirm Commitment to Diplomacy at UN Despite Deep Divides

Iran and the United States have reaffirmed their commitment to diplomacy during high-level discussions at the United Nations, even as deep disagreements persist over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security, and sanctions relief, officials said on Tuesday.

Speaking on the sidelines of the UN meetings, representatives from both countries signalled that diplomatic channels remain open, stressing the importance of dialogue to prevent further escalation in an already volatile Middle East. However, neither side indicated that a breakthrough was imminent, underscoring the significant gaps that continue to stall progress.

US officials reiterated Washington’s position that Iran must take concrete steps to limit its nuclear activities and cooperate fully with international inspectors. They warned that rising uranium enrichment levels remain a major concern for global security. At the same time, the Biden administration emphasised it remains open to negotiations if Iran demonstrates verifiable compliance.

Iranian officials, meanwhile, accused the United States of failing to uphold previous commitments, particularly regarding sanctions relief. Tehran insists that economic restrictions imposed by Washington have crippled its economy and must be lifted as part of any renewed agreement. Iranian diplomats also stressed that Iran’s nuclear programme is intended for peaceful purposes, a claim disputed by Western governments.

The renewed diplomatic messaging comes amid heightened regional tensions, including conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine, which have further complicated international relations. Analysts say both Tehran and Washington are under pressure to avoid actions that could trigger wider instability, even as domestic political considerations limit flexibility on both sides.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has repeatedly urged restraint and dialogue, warning that miscalculation could have serious global consequences. Diplomats familiar with the talks said confidence-building measures may be explored in the coming months, though progress is expected to be slow and fragile.

While the latest exchanges offered little immediate resolution, observers noted that continued engagement itself is significant, given years of strained relations. For now, diplomacy remains the preferred path, even as mistrust and unresolved disputes continue to define US-Iran relations.
