NEW DELHI – A powerful cold wave sweeping across parts of Asia and Europe has tightened its grip on Delhi-NCR, triggering dense fog conditions and pushing temperatures to seasonal lows. Weather officials confirmed that early morning visibility dropped sharply across the national capital region, leading to widespread travel delays and safety advisories.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), minimum temperatures in several parts of Delhi and neighbouring cities fell close to freezing levels, intensifying winter discomfort for residents. Cold northwesterly winds and persistent fog have combined to create hazardous conditions on highways, rail routes, and at major airports.
Flight operations at Indira Gandhi International Airport were affected as visibility dipped below safe landing thresholds during early hours. Multiple flights were delayed, while rail services also experienced disruptions due to fog-related operational restrictions. Traffic police issued advisories urging commuters to drive cautiously and use fog lights on major road corridors.
Health officials warned that prolonged exposure to extreme cold could increase the risk of respiratory infections and hypothermia among vulnerable populations and complications for elderly citizens. Hospitals reported a rise in patients with cold-related ailments, prompting authorities to activate winter emergency response measures.
Municipal bodies and state agencies have intensified shelter operations for homeless communities, distributing blankets and warm clothing across temporary night shelters. NGOs and volunteers have also stepped in to provide hot meals and thermal supplies to those most affected.
Meteorologists say the current cold wave is part of a broader global weather pattern linked to shifting jet streams and polar air movement. Similar extreme winter conditions have been reported in parts of Central Asia and Europe, highlighting the growing unpredictability of seasonal weather trends.
Forecast models suggest that dense fog and low temperatures could persist over the next several days, particularly during nighttime and early morning hours. Authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor exposure, stay hydrated, and follow official weather updates.
As Delhi-NCR braces for continued winter severity, officials remain on high alert to manage transport safety, public health concerns, and emergency response operations across the region.
