Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Build on Ceasefire After China-Hosted Talks
Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to build on a fragile ceasefire following weeks of border fighting, after senior officials from both countries held talks hosted by China, according to Al Jazeera. The agreement marks a cautious step toward easing tensions after clashes along disputed border areas raised concerns of a wider escalation.
The talks were held in China’s Yunnan province and involved diplomatic and military representatives from Bangkok and Phnom Penh. Officials said both sides committed to maintaining the ceasefire, improving communication between security forces, and pursuing further dialogue to prevent renewed violence along the border.
Fighting had flared earlier this month near contested sections of the frontier, an area long affected by unresolved territorial claims dating back decades. The clashes led to troop movements, exchanges of fire, and the temporary displacement of civilians living near the border, prompting regional concern and calls for restraint.
China, which maintains close ties with both Southeast Asian nations, played a mediating role in bringing the two sides together. In a joint statement following the talks, participants emphasized the importance of stability, mutual trust, and peaceful resolution of disputes through diplomatic channels.
Thai officials said the ceasefire remains in effect and that local commanders have been instructed to avoid actions that could provoke further confrontation. Cambodian representatives echoed the commitment, stressing the need to protect civilians and restore normal conditions in affected border communities.
While the agreement does not resolve the underlying territorial disputes, analysts say it reflects a shared recognition that prolonged conflict would harm economic activity and regional cooperation. Both countries are key members of ASEAN, which has repeatedly stressed dialogue and non-violence in handling internal and cross-border tensions.
The China-hosted talks come at a time of heightened geopolitical sensitivity in the region, with major powers seeking to strengthen their influence in Southeast Asia. Beijing’s involvement underscores its growing diplomatic role in regional conflict management.
Despite the positive tone, observers caution that the ceasefire remains delicate. Past agreements between Thailand and Cambodia have collapsed under pressure from local incidents and political tensions. For now, both governments say they will continue talks and explore confidence-building measures aimed at ensuring the border remains calm.
